BSAF 2019: ReelAbilities Film Festival, Day One

IT’S HERE! IT’S HERE! Boston Springs A Fethival 2019 is officially underway, and we’ll have info for all the various festivals and their schedules every day, so be sure to keep your browser turned to eCinemaBoston.com for all the latest info!

ReelAbilities Boston showcases those with disabilities and the way people overcome them. It’s a unique film festival concept that has been happening in New York since 2007, and beginning with Cincinnati in 2012, has now spread to a national network of local festivals.

This year’s opening night film is the documentary Far From The Tree – here’s the official synopsis from the ReelAbilities Boston website:

Based on Andrew Solomon’s bestselling book, Far From the Tree is a human look at families raising children in a society that deems “different”. A mother and son determined to show the world that his Down syndrome does not define him; a couple learning to communicate with their bright but nonverbal son with autism; a young woman dealing with what it means to be the only little person in her family; and parents whose deep love for their son persists even after he has committed an unspeakable crime. The film invites viewers to rethink what it means to be a normal family.

A discussion with the film’s subjects will follow the screening. The film is co-presented with Aspire MassGeneral Hospital for Children and Asperger / Autism Network (AANE), Independent Film Festival Boston and Wicked Queer.

Opening night screening takes place at the Somerville Theatre at 7:00 PM. Admission is free, but you must register, which you can do here.

ReelAbilities Boston is an excellent way to celebrate life in all its glory – films presented by this festival are usually uplifting and truly magical, so know if you’re headed for a film here, you’re going to come out thinking a LOT about what you’ve seen, and also probably with a smile on your face…
